Mykola Tomenko: Ukrainian and Bulgarian Scholars and General Public will celebrate the 170th Anniversary of Birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov

Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Ukraine Dimitar
Vladimirov.
The parties called for strengthening the inter-parliamentary cooperation, sharing the experience in the sphere of education, culture, public health, and tourism. The parties agreed to jointly organize celebration of the 170th anniversary of birth of a prominent Ukrainian scholar and public figure Mykhailo Drahomanov (in September 2011).
The Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament informed that together with his colleagues, People´s Deputies V. Zubanov and V. Petrenko, he had registered the draft resolution "On Celebration of the 170th Anniversary of Birth of Prominent Ukrainian Writer, Political Essayist, Historian and Public Figure Mykhailo Petrovych Drahomanov", suggesting a nationwide celebration. Mykola Tomenko announced that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine put the draft resolution on the agenda. He expects that it will be passed.
The Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is convinced that the 170th anniversary of birth of Mykhailo Drahomanov will be celebrated in both states. He announced that M. Drahomanov is famous for his public and scholarly activity both in Ukraine and in Bulgaria. As it is known, M. Drahomanov lived and worked in Bulgaria as a professor in Sofia University, and his book collection was taken as a basis for the University library named after M. Drahomanov. He made a great contribution into the formation of education and science in Bulgaria. Mykhailo Drahomanov died and is buried in Bulgaria.
In his turn, Dimitar
Vladimirov, Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Ukraine, supported the idea of joint celebration.
Namely, the Ambassador expressed willingness to hold a scientific conference in
Sofia University, where M. Drahomanov worked, and to invite
scholars who researched the works of M. Drahomanov to
the conference in Kyiv and celebration events in Poltava region, birthplace of a
famous Ukrainian public figure.
